Saturday 15th September 2012

Yet another Saturday with a hatful of goals in the York Minster Engineering Premier League but no major surprises as the top three sides all recorded victories over the three bottom sides.  Old Malton,  had on paper the harder task of the top four sides as they travelled to fifth in the table Riccall but the hosts who have failed to score even a goal against the Ryedale side in their previous four meetings drew a blank yet again as they lost 5-0. Danny Fogg headed the visitors in front after 6 minutes with Jon Newton taping in their second five minutes later before Fogg completed his hat-trick before the break. Jack Thackray added a late goal for Old Malton as they extended their unbeaten away run to 19 games. League leaders Wigginton improved their goal difference as they hammered Hamilton Panthers 11-2, Lee McQuade, scoring for the fifth game on the trot, led the rout with five goals, ably   assisted by Kev Butler (3) Lee Stewart (2) and an og, Steve Jarman and Neil Hartley replied for Panthers.  Dunnington easily maintained their 100% record as they put eight without reply past basement side York St Johns, Scott Sullivan scored half their tally to add to contributions from Luke Dove (2) Tom Richards and Josh Tatteresall. Dunnington won the corresponding fixture last season 8-1 and have not lost to the students since April 2008.  Huntington kept on par with the leading sides as they defeated lowly Poppleton 4-1, Chris Dyson opened and completed the scoring for Huntington whilst in between James Barrett bagged his first of the season to add to a Gary Mitchinson goal,   Nick Moss claimed a late consolation for Poppleton.  Having picked up the notable scalps of Old Malton and Wigginton on their previous two trips Copmanthorpe were brought back to earth as they lost at Terrington despite Joel Dixon giving them an early lead. Alex Yeats levelled for the hosts before Danny Bulmer hit the second half winner for Terrington. Steve Aconley struck twice in the first half to gave his Easingwold side the advantage in their encounter at York RI but the hosts eventually responded with a Lee Powell treble, a Liam Keenaghan penalty and one from Dave McNichol to win 5-3, Tom Green added a third for the visitors. Despite goals from Marco Shepherd and Mike Mckenzie Dringhouses slipped to their third game without a win as they lost 3-2 at home to Nestle.

St Clements are the early pacemakers in Division One as they chalked up their second successive win, a 2-1 victory at Amotherby. Danny Adams gave the Saints the lead from the penalty spot and though Andy Phillips restored parity before the break,  Kenny Sharman’s second half strike ensured maximum points for the visitors. Pocklington having won 1-0 at Wilberfoss last week repeated the same score against the same opposition, on this occasion Tom Raey hit the only goal of the game.  A late Liam Burdett equaliser enabled Malton & Norton to extended their unbeaten away run to 9 games as they drew 1-1 at Hemingbrough, it was the hosts first home draw since April 2010, Luke Zacharenko had earlier given Hemingbrough the lead.  Aviva  are another side with an impressive away record as they pushed their unbeaten run on their travels to 6 with a 4-1 win at Total Sports. Tom Shirley’s early goal for the Insurance men was cancelled out by Tom Robinson but goals from Adam Osguthorpe, Neil Richards and Dara Duffy ensured Aviva the points. Tockwith opened their points account at the second time of asking as goals from James Neville and an og saw them to a 2-0 win over Haxby.

In Division Two,  Heslington and Fulford recorded their third stalemate from their last four meetings as the sides drew 2-2, an og gave Heslington an early lead before Sam Harrison struck twice in a minute but John Pipe salvaged a point for Heslington with virtually the last kick of the game. Chris Harkin hit the only goal of the game as Cliffe beat Osbaldwick 1-0, the O’s have not beaten Cliffe in their last five meetings including a 1-0 home defeat last season. Bishopthorpe picked up their first win of the season as two goals from Ben Jones and one from Paul Galdas helped them to a 3-1 victory at Thorpe. John Cooper hit a hat-trick in Strensall’s 7-1 home win over  Stamford Bridge 7-1, Jordan Wilson (2) Danny Mason and Jack Bell completed hosts tally with Michael Woods hitting the lone reply for the visitors.

A goal in each half from Billy Martin and Steve Fratson helped Rufforth to a solid start in Division Three as they made it 2 wins from 2 as they defeated Huby 2-1. Tom Williams snatched a late goal for Huby. F1 Racing who just missed out on promotion last season,  opened their campaign with a 5-2 home win over promoted Bishop Wilton. First half goals from Neil Yeowart (2) Andy Proctor and Ben Storey saw F1 race into a four goal lead before Tom Knowles and Paul Tatterton reduced the deficit. Yeowart completed hit trick in the second period. Will Nicholson hit Barmby Moor’s winner two minutes from time at Elvington as they won 2-1, earlier a Greg Nesbitt free kick had been cancelled out for the hosts by an Adam Robinson effort.

York Acorn made their York Minster Engineering League debut but despite hitting four goals in their Division Four encounter with LNER Builders they went down 6-4. Conner Larner (2) Wilson Briggs and Chris Elliker shared the Acorns goals with Builders replying through a Sam Hill treble, Steve Laidlaw, Jim Squires and Gary Hardcastle. Tadcaster Town, formerly under the guise of Fox FC, had to weather a late comeback from hosts Melbourne before running out 3-2 winners, goals from Tony Wetherell, Tom Deighton and Will Leatt appeared to set up a comfortable win for Tadcaster but Melbourne rallied with late strikes from Kieran Hartnell and Gedas Labanauskis.

Wigginton, last seasons runners up in Reserve A, began the new campaign with a 5-2 home win over Riccall which included a hat-trick for Josh Hutchinson. Grasshoppers other goals came from Nick Dunlop and Ben Thompson with Jim Darlison getting both Riccall’s goals. Newly promoted York RI went down 4-3 at Haxby with the home goals shared between J J Bell, Paul Holmes (2) and Andy Carter.

The two sides promoted to Reserve B both collected points in their opening games, a cross-cum-shot from Joe Karnski gave Fulford the perfect start at home to Aviva and though Jimmy Wood levelled for Aviva,  Paul Gordon ensured Fulford collected all three points in their opening fixture with their late winner as Fulford won 2-1. Promoted Tadcaster had an entertaining goalless draw with Amotherby, it was the visitors first away draw in 15 games. It was mixed fortunes for the two sides who dropped down from the top tier, York St Johns,  despite leading through two goals from Patrick Stockton eventually lost 7-2 to Pocklington with their goals coming from Barry Gargett (3) John Heads, Nick Daniells and Mike Stacey (2) but Easingwold, looking to return at the first time of asking won 4-1 at home to White Horse, John Dey (2) Andrew Metcalfe (Snr) and Simon Wilson were all on target for Easingwold.

In the only two Reserve C games, second half goals from Bobby Templeton and Jamie Rank earned Stamford Bridge a 2-0 win over Hemingbrough and Josh Knowles hit a hat-trick for newly promoted Selby RSSC in their 6-6 draw with Nestle, Luke Lambert, Janos Takacs and Dave Sayles completed the Selby sides tally.

The Reserve D section welcomed three new sides to their ranks but unfortunately none of the newcomers managed a winning start. Despite a brace from Ian Dunning-Leak and a Tom Bateson goal Rufforth lost 6-3 to Tadcaster Town while Gareth Strain hit a treble and Sean Corr a double for Civil Service as they defeated new boys Wheldrake 5-1, Tom Anderson hit the Wheldrake reply and having drawn level after trailing 2-0 at home to F 1 Racing,  St Clements eventually lost 5-3. On target for the new Saints were Ricki Mizzi and Joe Hamilton (2) with the Racing reply based upon goals from Adam McGuigan, Sean Taylor Nigel Dawber and two Ben Caverely penalties. The two relegated sides from last season clashed at Cliffe and an Olly Everhard hat-trick plus an Alan Boyd effort helped Crayke to a comfortable 4-0 win.

Saturday 8th September 2012

In a day of plenty of goals and crazy results in the York Minster Engineering Premier League, Wigginton surrendered their unbeaten record but their superior goal difference sees them head a group of four teams all on 15 points,  to stay top of the table,  and for the second Saturday on the trot,  only one home side collected maximum points. In Copmanthorpe’s last game they travelled up to Old Malton and ended their hosts 32 match unbeaten run and they have now inflicted a first home defeat in 11 games for Wigginton as well as ending their 100% start to the season. Eddie Clapham gave Grasshoppers an early lead but within two minutes Cop equalised courtesy of Danny Leach, in the second half Lee McQuade hit his 9th goal of the season to restore Wigginton’s lead but again Cop were back on level terms within two minutes, on this occasion through Joel Dixon, and Dixon then hit his second of the game 20 minutes from time to secure a 3-2 for Copmanthorpe. Cop also registered the double over Wigginton last season.   Dunnington are now the only Premier League side with a 100% record after their comfortable 8-2 win at Poppleton which saw them extend their unbeaten run to 11 matches. Nick Moss hit both goals for the hosts with Dunnington’s tally shared between Luke Dove – his first for his new club - , Martin Playle,  and a hat-trick each for Jimmy Wilmoth and Scott Sullivan. It was the third time in their last four meetings that Dunnington have hit the back of the Pop net 8 times in a game.  Old Malton pushed their unbeaten away run to 18 games following their 3-1 win at York RI and recorded their first double of the season having already beaten RI at home 1-0 last month.  Danny Fogg gave the Ryedale side the lead at the break and though this was cancelled out by a Liam Keenaghan penalty,   goals from skipper Robbie Baker and Jon Newton earned Old Malton the win. Huntington ran amok at York St Johns as they hammered the students 10-0, James Edmund gave Huntington the lead after just five minutes before what may have been the turning point of the game,  as Huntington keeper Leon Wrigglesworth saved a penalty after which it became a procession as the visitors scored at ease with a Dave Hartas header, Chris Dyson (3) John James (2) Josh Leeming, Gary Newton and Chris Dempsey. It was York St Johns heaviest home defeat since August 2005 when they were beaten 11-0 by Huntington. Selby RSSC notched up their first ever win in the Premier League as they won 3-2 at Terrington, John Page put the visitors in front with Tim Jewitt doubling Selby’s advantage before Ben Richardson pulled a goal back for the hosts but before the break Shane Caulkill restored their two goal lead. Selby secured their second successive victory at Terrington despite a late goal from Mikey Brown. Easingwold recorded their biggest home victory since January 2005 as they thumped Nestle 7-0 with goals from James Moverley (2) George Kirk, Steve Aconley and an Angus Taylor hat-trick which included two penalties.
The craziest score-line of all was at Hamilton Panthers were the hosts trailed 7-1 before eventually losing 8-6. The Panthers goals came from Steve Jarman, Adam Brooke, Chris Scott, Mark Willoughby and Neil Hartley (2) with Riccall sharing their tally between Andy Addison,  Michael Braithwaite, Wayne Brooke, Gary Collier, Danny Rodwell, Marchin Wolski and a Paul King brace - against his old club.

In the opening fixtures in Division One neither of the two relegated sides from the Premier League tasted victory, Wilberfoss lost 1-0 at home to Pocklington while Haxby drew 2-2 with Total Sports. Dale Waddington gave Haxby the lead before goals from Ben Brannigan and Tom Robinson swung the game in favour of the visitors but a late equaliser from Henry Robinson registered Haxby’s first draw in 32 games. Two goals from Simon Reeves helped Malton & Norton extend their unbeaten run from last season to 14 matches as the Ryedale side drew 2-2 at promoted Avia, Tom Shirley and Neil Richardson replied for the Insurance men. Since joining the league seven years ago, St Clements have never lost an opening day fixture and despite falling behind to a Graham Hutchinson goal 15 minutes from time at Tockwith, the visitors rallied to preserve their record as Scott Nicholas and a Bobby Clapham brace earned St Clements a 3-1 win. Heworth and Bishopthorpe, the two relegated sides from Division One clashed in their opening fixture in Division Two and Heworth,  who last season did the double over Bishopthorpe,  continued the trend winning 4-3 with Lee Bunce scoring all their goals. Rawcliffe suffered an opening day defeat for the first time since 2005 as they lost 3-1 at home to Thorpe, John Moss hit the solitary Rawcliffe goal. Last seasons Division Three Champions Tadcaster Magnets were within a minute of opening their campaign with a win after Andy Kitchen had given them a first half lead at Strensall, but the hosts,  who have not lost an opening day fixture since September 2004.  salvaged a draw with a last minute equaliser from Jason Heslop. The category of strangest own goal of the season has probably been claimed already !!, and the benefactors were Heslington as they drew 2-2 at Cliffe. Nathan Parker put the home side in front only for Paul Tanton to “over- hit” a back pass from 35 yards out which gave his own keeper no chance at all and duly level the game. Parker restored Cliffe’s lead before Aidan Bardy equalised to record Heslington first draw in 22 games.

In the only Division Three fixture Steve Gagen marked his debut for his new club with a hat-trick as Rufforth beat Selby Olympia 5-0,  Billy Martin and Ryan Wilson completed the nap hand for Rufforth while the only Reserve game scheduled saw Malton & Norton defeat Selby RSSC 3-0 in Reserve C with a Joe Jefferson goal sandwiched between an Ed Marwood brace.

Saturday 1st September 2012

Wigginton Grasshoppers have established themselves as the early leaders in the York Minster Engineering Premier League having collected maximum points from their opening 5 games. Their latest success was a 4-1 win at newly promoted Selby RSSC Lee McQuade’s opening goal for Wigginton was cancelled out by Shane Caukill but the visitors were back in front within four minutes through Tom Coates and extended their lead further on the stroke of half-time as McQuade took his personally tally for the campaign to 8. In the second period Eddie Clapham completed the scoring with a penalty after Tom Coates had been brought down. Dunnington maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-1 win at Riccall and in doing so inflicted a first defeat of the season on their hosts. Alex Lowe gave Dunnington an early lead and though Riccall must have thought that they were going into the interval on level terms when Darren Davis equalised on 43 minutes only for Scott Sullivan to restore the visitors lead within a minute.  Dunnington’s tenth game without defeat was confirmed by Tom Mathews in the final quarter-of-an hour. Old Malton bounced back from their surprise mid-week defeat with a 4-0 win at Hamilton Panthers. The game should have been over as a contest before the interval but the visitors missed a hatful of chances, the main culprit been Jon Newton,  so the match was almost an hour old before the deadlock was eventually broken and then Malton hit three goals in the space of five minutes.  The home keeper spilled a Richard Dunning cross into his own net to put the visitors in front and within a minute Newton finally found the back of the net from a Cooke cross with Scott Preston converting a penalty three minutes later. Newton atoned for his early misses when he latched onto a Cooke through ball to bag his second of the afternoon. Since winning Promotion to the Premier League Easingwold have never really got close to beating Huntington, they lost both fixtures 7-0 last season. so when Chris Dempsey met a Mitchinson cross after two minutes to put Huntington ahead and Gary Newton headed in their second after quarter-of-an hour,  another mauling looked on the cards but the hosts dug deep and before the break had reduced the arrears through Steve Aconley.  An Easingwold comeback was however denied in the second half as Newton converted a penalty with his usual aplomb before Dyson and Edmund both came off the bench to combine as the latter made it 4-1. Terrington Glory notched up their first home win in the Premier League as they defeated Rowntrees 3-1, Ben Richardson hit their opener with Mikey Brown adding a goal in each half. Poppleton picked up their first point of the season as they recorded their first draw in 15 matches as they shared 6 goals with Dringhouses. Two Danny Temple goals saw Pop deservedly lead at the break before ‘Houses drew level courtesy of an own goal and a Mike McKenzie effort. Luke Berridge restored Pop’s advantage before Craig McShane equalised ten minutes from time. After three successive defeats York RI were determined not to start the new campaign with what would have been their worst losing sequence since promotion to the Premier League but  a brace each for Mark Wood and Lee Powell,  both in the first half,  set RI on their way to a comfortable 5-1 win at York St Johns. Dave McNicol completed the nap hand for RI with Angus Jones replying for St Johns.
