NOVEMBER 17th 2012

Old Malton’s grip on the York Minster Engineering Premier League Championship Shield is well and truly slipping after they suffered a rare defeat at current leaders Dunnington who have now opened up a seven point lead over second placed Wigginton who lost at Huntington Rovers.

Dunnington,  who have failed to record a home win over their Ryedale rivals since February 2007,  opened the scoring through Rob Chipps after quarter-of-an hour, Simon Cooke restored parity but just before the break Josh Tattersall  gave Dunnington the vital  advantage at the break. The three points were confirmed for the hosts with a brilliant Scott Sullivan free kick in the second period.

Wigginton suffered their first away defeat in five as they failed to adapted to the heavy conditions at Huntington, Lee Jackson struck an exquisite goal to put the host in front at the break and John James doubled their lead midway through the second half before Kev Butler pulled a late goal back for Grasshoppers. It was only the second time in eight meetings that Huntington had taken the honours over Wigginton and also avenged the 5-0 drubbing they took at Wigginton on the opening day in August.

Basement side Hamilton Panthers collected their first points of the season as they recorded a win for the first time since last January and they did it the hard way!! Visitors York RI,  who had struck 27 goals past Panthers in their previous five meetings led at the break 5-1 courtesy of a  Lee Powell hat-trick and one each from Dave McNichol and Darren Sellars. Matters were made worse for Panthers when they were reduced to 10 men but the new-look Panthers somehow managed to win 6-5 with goals from Matty Walters (2) Christian Fox (2) Josh Leeming and their winner four minutes from time through Danny Farthing.

Terrington’s away success continues as they notched up their 12th  away game without defeat as they triumphed 4-2 at Dringhouses. Twice ‘Houses led,  initially with a Javier Shepherd tap-in then with a Sam Kitson strike but the Glory boys hit back through Ben Richardson, Jordan Grose and a Alex Yates brace. Easingwold’s only win over Riccall in the last five years was last season but the record never looked likely to be improved as they conceded goals to Paul King, Will Ramsey, Andy Addison, Dave Heron, Steve Lyon, Tom Littlewood, and Danny Rodwell as Riccall won 7-1, Andy Haigh hit the token reply for Easingwold. Since promotion to the Premier League Poppleton have never tasted success at York St Johns and a Harry Hewson treble added to a Tom Hairyes double ensured the students maintained their winning run as they won 5-1, Michael Lilley replied for Pop,

The top two sides in Division One both won and have a useful nine point advantage over the chasing pack. Leaders Aviva raced into a three goal lead assisted by two own goals and one from Lee Downham in their home encounter with Amotherby before the visitors rallied with goals from Matty Webster and John Dunning, Neil Richardson and Tom Shirley then both hit their seventh goal of the season to ensure a 5-2 win for Aviva. Second placed St Clements hit three second half goals through Dale Lumley (2) and Chris Rowan to extend their unbeaten run to 6 as they defeated Total Sports 3-0. Tockwith ended a run of five games without a win with a 2-0 home win over Pocklington 2-0 with a goal in each half, Andy Wilson hit their opener and James Neville their second. Pock have now failed to record a win over Tockwith in their last nine meetings. Hemingbrough’s Tom Collins scored all his sides goals in their 4-1 win at Wilberfoss, Mark Hughes replied for the hosts. Malton & Norton entertained Haxby in a league encounter for the first time in four years and notched up their first win over Haxby in five attempts despite falling behind to an early Matty Wash goal, Chris Hodgson levelled for the Ryedale side before a Marcus Gosell brace and a  Ryan Rivis goal sealed a 4-1 victory.

It was all change at the top of Division Two, leaders Heslington lost at the seemingly impregnable Tadcaster Magnets, conceding three goals in the first 10 minutes and eventually losing 6-1, Phil Smith (2) Ben Wilson (2) John Crawley and Danny Phillis shared the Taddy tally who are now unbeaten at home in their last 20 games,  with Lee Topping, scoring for the third game on the trot, replying for Heslington. With Second placed Strensall waterlogged, Fulford leap-frogged to the top of the table after their 4-1 win at Bishopthorpe, scoring all their goals in the first half through Sam Harrison, Steve Jarvis, Jamie Husband  and an og before Ben Jones reduced the deficit for Bish in the second period. Thorpe Utd sit just a point behind Fulford after defeating Stamford Bridge 4-1, on target for Thorpe were Glen Littlewood, Dean Wood, Dan Mustill and Shaun Pickles with Connor Richardson doing likewise for the visitors. Rawcliffe registered their first home win in five as they defeated Osbaldwick 5-3, goals from Lewis Howarth, Simon Wilson and keeper Leon Finney with a free kick saw Rawcliffe 3-0 in front at the interval. John Morris increased their lead before the O’s hit back but Paul Braniscombe secured the win for Rawcliffe.

Tom Knowles maintained his record of scoring in every game this season as Division Three leaders Bishop Wilton won 3-1 at Crayke, Darren Woodhead and Ted Donkin completed the scoring for the visitors while Tom Hilling hit a late goal for Crayke who are still looking for their first win in 14. The only game in Division Four saw top-of-the-table York Acorn entertain basement side Moor Lane with the inevitable landslide win for the hosts. The Dutton brothers Leigh (3) and Andy (2) hit half their sides ten goals with Wilson Briggs (2) Connor Larna,  Chris Ellerker and Luke Richardson sharing the remainder.

Wigginton continue to dominant Reserve A as they extend their lead to 13 points as their nearest rivals Haxby lost. Grasshoppers comfortably pushed their unbeaten run to 14 with a 5-1 home win over York RI, Rob Orr (2) Craig Huggins, Jack Green and Nick Dunlop shared the Wigginton nap hand with Dave Clarke’s ninth goal of the season been RI’s only reply. Haxby conceded a goal in each half, the first to Chris Holmes, the second to Ali Bell as they lost 2-0 at home to Huntington. Dunnington, with games in hand, look to be the only side capable to challenge Wigginton and they pushed their unbeaten run to 22 with a 4-1 win at Copmanthorpe.

It is rapidly becoming a two horse race in Reserve B as Easingwold and White Horse move 8 points clear of the rest of the table. Steve Wagg hit the only goal of the game as White Horse defeated Aviva while Easingwold hit seven unanswered goals past Fulford. Andrew Metcalfe (Jnr) with a hat-trick, Andrew Metcalfe (Snr) a brace and Darren Copper and Luke Boudoir were all on the Easingwold score sheet.    Both Heslington and Bishopthorpe chalked up their third draw of the season as they shared the spoils at Heslington, Rich Carroll’s opener for Heslington was cancelled out by Graham Vickers for Bish and when Russ Carr restored Heslington’s lead Jamie Mackie levelled again for Bish as the game finished 2-2.

Two of the three games played in Reserve C finished all-square, a late equaliser from Ben Kirby preserved  leaders Poppleton’s unbeaten home run as they salvaged a point with a 1-1 draw with Tockwith, earlier Steve Dey had given the visitors the lead. Tockwith  were the last side to win at Pop in April 2011. Second placed Malton & Norton had to settle for a point from their visit to Hemingbrough after they conceded an equaliser to Ricky Hutton,  Joe Jefferson had earlier given the Ryedale side the lead.
