Match Reports from 13 April

13th April 2013

Wigginton Grasshoppers drop out of the top two in the York Minster Engineering Premier League for the first time this season as they suffered their first away defeat in seven games to leave title rivals Dunnington needing just five points from their remaining six games to take the title.

Wigginton travelled to Copmanthorpe having lost the previous three encounters with their hosts but took an early lead through  Dan Zambeli after just 10 minutes. The Cop keeper Ben Sheehan converted his fifth penalty of the season to level the scores before Copmanthorpe confirmed their eighth straight win on the trot with late goals from Mark Featherstone and Robin Bedford. That defeat leaves the Premiership title within easy reach of Dunnington after they extended their unbeaten run to 28 games with a 2-1 win at out-of-sorts Huntington Rovers. James Edmund headed the hosts into an early lead which they held until the final 20 minutes  before conceding goals to Alex Lowe and Dunnington’s Player-Manager Matty Wain who hit a spectacular 30 yard volley to clinch the win.

Old Malton who had not conceded a goal in their previous four games had little difficulty in extending the run by another hour and a half as they walloped Rowntrees 9-0 at home, the visitors were however handicapped as their keeper saw red before the break. The Ryedale rout was started by Richard Dunning and finished by Richard Stevenson and the goals in between came from Damian Cox and two each for  Dean Nuttall , Darren Dunning and Jon Newton.

Both Dringhouses and Selby RSSC achieved creditable midweek draws against the top two sides in the league and they continued the trend when they met at Dringhouses, Louis Blackwell’s early goal for Selby was cancelled out by Marco Shepherd as they drew 1-1. York St Johns celebrated their first league goal in over six hours when Lee Wilmslow scored at York RI  but the result however was a disappointing 6-2 defeat,  York RI netted through Lee Powell, Dave McNichol, Liam Keenaghan and a hat-trick from Carl Shepherd while Liam Waterworth added the second goal for the Students. Basement side Hamilton Panthers slipped nearer to relegation following their 6-1 defeat at Riccall, the home goals were shared between Dave Heron, Will Ramsey and a brace each for Gary Collier and Tom Littlewood.

A Scott Nicholas hat-trick helped St Clements to a 3-0 home win over  Malton & Norton in Division One and  finally quash the Ryedale sides hopes for Premier League  football , at least for another season. The Saints,  who have now gone over seven and half hours without conceding a goal,  are now surely favourites to be playing in the Premier League next season.  White Horse maintained their interest in the promotion places  as they collected maximum points from their visit to Pocklington with a 4-1 win, Ash Newton gave Pock an early advantage but before the break the Church Fenton side led with goals from John Langrick and Olly Sykes and added further goals from Dave Marshall  and Rory McCraie.  Next Saturday White Horse travel to league leaders Aviva knowing a defeat will probably cost them the chance of playing against the elite next August.

In Division Two Tadcaster Magnets suffered their first home defeat since joining the York Football league in 2010 -  a run of 24 matches-  as they lost 3-1 to promotion rivals Bishopthorpe. That result,  coupled with Osbaldwick’s 3-0 win at Cliffe,  takes the O’s back to the top of the table and a win on Wednesday for Osbaldwick at Fulford,  will guarantee them promotion. The O’s who had failed to score in their previous three games with Cliffe quickly opened their account through Steve Smith with Mike Whiteley and Harry Cartledge adding second half goals.  Should Tadcaster and Bishopthorpe both win in midweek then a promotion place will be at stake when the two sides clash again at Bishopthorpe on Saturday.   Sam Harrison scored twice for Fulford as they ended a three match winless run with a 3-2 victory over Rawcliffe.

Despite been involved in a Junior League Cup tie,  F1 Racing were promoted from Division Three as second placed Bishop Wilton were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Sporting Knavesmire.  A Rob Eeles goal separated the sides until the final minute but Sporting snatched a late equaliser to keep themselves in with an outside chance of promotion.  Barmby Moor moved into second position in the table after their 4-2 home win over Elvington. Simon Houlder and Greg Nesbitt both scored inside the first five minutes and though Harriers reduced the arrears before the interval through Sam Martin, second half goals from Will Nicholson and Shaun Elvidge sealed a first win in five for Barmby and put their promotion hopes back on track, Adam Robertson added a late goal of the Harriers who though they have games in hand, are six points away from safety.  Rufforth virtually confirmed their Division Three status for next season with a 2-0 home win over Huby, Graham Rae and Phil Jones were on target for the home side.

Two goals from Will Deakin helped Tadcaster Town warm up for their Championship decider with York Acorn in Division Four as they inflicted a first home defeat of the year on hosts Wheldrake,  winning 4-0, Tom Deighton,  with his 22nd league goal of the season,  added the third with Tony Wetherell completing the scoring. Moor Lane recorded back-to-back home wins despite trailing twice to Huntington FC,  Gavin Harford hit their first equaliser, Brendan Walsh their second before Adam Caske sealed a 3-2 win for Moor Lane

Kyle Wilks and Kie Latham shared the Selby Town Res goals in their 4-1 home win over Melbourne.

Just one more win for Dunnington will wrap up their third successive Reserve A title after they beat Haxby 3-1. Rob Hart, scoring for the fourth game on the trot,  gave Dunnington the lead and Josh Martin doubled their advantage but the hosts rallied and halved the deficit before the break through Nathan Green but the win was eventually secured with a second goal from Martin.

White Horse missed out on their chance to take the Reserve B Championship title as they suffered their first home defeat of the season as they lost 2-1 to promotion rivals Fulford FC Utd.  Joe Kanarski fired the visitors into the lead before the break and Danny Holme added their second before the Church Fenton side pulled a goal back but win at home over local rivals Tadcaster Magnets on Monday evening will secure them the title.  Despite Fulford’s win they are still a point behind Easingwold Town who just edged past basement side Amotherby & Swinton, John Dey scoring the only goal as Easingwold won 1-0.

Stamford Bridge recorded their first win over Thorpe in six meetings to keep alive their Reserve C promotion hopes. On target for Stamford were Jamie Rank (2) Shaun Skipen, Dave Lynch and an own goal. Hemingbrough eased their relegation worries as they condemn basement side Strensall to their sixth away defeat of the season as the hosts won 3-1, Liam Gaughty’s opening goal for Hemingbrough was cancelled out by Luke Quantock but two late goals from Ricky Hutton and Mike Brown secured only a second home win of the campaign for Hemingbrough.  Tockwith remain in the relegation zone despite their 5-0 home win Poppleton but are now just one point away from safety, Graham Hutchison scored twice for Tockwith to add to goals from Simon Lewis, Jim Drew and an own goal.

Reserve D Champions Civil Service suffered their first home defeat in 10 games as they lost 3-0 to Cliffe,  who maintained their unbeaten away record for the season. Ben Rawson struck two late goals for Cliffe to add to a first half effort from Shaun Gallagher.

Tadcaster Town recorded their first home draw of the season and Wheldrake their first away draw as the two sides shared 10 goals.  Wheldrake,  who scored through Kyle Davis, Andy Carter and a hat-trick from Tom Anderson led 1-0, 4-1 and 5-2 with the hosts snatching a point with a last gasp goal from Lee Acaster. Jordan Mason and Lewis Chipchase shared Tadcasters opening four goals.

There were no surprises in the Senior League Cup-ties as the two Premier League sides comfortably defeated their Division One opponents,  two goals a piece for Adam Ferguson and Nick Moss helped Poppleton to a 6-1 home win over Amotherby, Justin Bedford and James Gledhill completed the Pop scoring with Andy Phillips replying for Amotherby while Simon Webster (2), Steve Aconley, Adam Paterson and Andrew Sugden helped Easingwold Town to a 5-1 win at Wilberfoss, James Parkin hit the solitary Foss goal.

Sub Paul Bentley hit the equaliser for F1 Racing in their Junior Cup tie with fellow Division Three side Civil Service to send the tie to penalties which the newly promoted F1 Racing won 4-3. Earlier Rich Proctor had given F1 the lead but Civil Service replied with goals from Chris Smith and a Gareth Inness penalty before the introduction of Bentley
