April 2013
For
the newly crowned Champions of the York Minster Engineering Premier League
it was busy as usual as Dunnington maintained their unbeaten run for the season
in comprehensive style as they defeated York St Johns 4-0. Not since April 2008
have St Johns
beaten Dunnington and they never looked like improving on that sequence as
Jonathon Andrews and Alex Lowe netted in the first half with Tom Richards and
Jimmy Wilmoth doing likewise after the interval. Old
Malton suffered their first defeat in 11 games as they lost 1-0 at Copmanthorpe
and hold on to the runners-up spot but only on goal difference from Cop, who
have a game in hand. Matty Bastock hit the only goal of the game after 10
minutes. Wigginton continue to slide down the table as they failed to win for
the fourth game on the trot, on this occasion they suffered at the hands of
the Rowntrees revival losing 2-1,
ex-Wiggington striker Kev Butler headed his new club in front after 20 minutes
with Carl Stewart doubling their lead eight minutes later. Lee Stewart
converted a Wigginton penalty but it was not enough to stop Rowntrees chalking
up their fourth home win on the bounce and one win away from securing their
Premier League status for another season. Easingwold
remain embroiled in the relegation battle after they lost 2-1 at home to York RI
– their ninth home game without a win. Lee Powell took his personally tally for
the season to 24 with RI’s opening goal before Liam Keenaghan made it 2-0 with
Dave Adams halving the deficit late in the proceedings. Riccall recorded their
first away win in four with a 3-1 win at Selby RSSC to leave their local rivals
still needing at least one win to be safe from relegation. Gary Collier, Tom
Littlewood and Luke Crowther shared the Riccall goals with Chris Coxen replying
for Selby. Basement side Hamilton
Panthers recorded their first home win since November as they beat Terrington Glory 5-1 with four
of their goals from Olly Newby, Adam Fishwick added Panthers other goal with
Alex Yates responding for the Glory boys who have now failed to win on the road
in five trips.
Aviva
clinched promotion to the Premier League as they won the winner-takes-all
battle with White Horse 2-1, the Church Fenton side took the lead after 15
minutes but within three minutes Tom Shirley’s quickly taken free kick had restored parity. A first league win over
White Horse in six attempts was confirmed for Aviva in the second half with
another Shirley goal and with it the Division One Championship Shield. St
Clements bounced back from their mid-week defeat to wrestle the advantage
from White Horse for the runners-up spot
with a 5-1 win at relegated Wilberfoss, Scott Nicholas (2) Dale Lumley, Danny
Adams and Mike Midgley shared Saints nap hand and a win against the same
opponents next week will see St Clements joining Aviva in the Premier League
next season. Malton & Norton wrapped up their season with a 2-1 win at
Total Sports, Marcus Godsell’s opening goal for the Ryedale side was their
first goal in almost five hours, Kevin Oxendale added Malton’s second with Ben
Brannigan replying for the hosts.
The
Division
Two title was at stake in the Bishopthorpe v Tadcaster Magnets
encounter and despite Bish taking the honours when the two sides meet last week
the destiny of the title was never in doubt as Taddy, aided by an Andy Kitchen hat-trick swept into
a three goal lead before the interval. Kitchen took his personally tally for
the season to 14 with his fourth goal of the game before Bishopthorpe hit back
with two late goals from Ben Jones and Andy Haigh but the Championship was
already won by Tadcaster Magnets, Osbaldwick were also promoted as runners-up.
Fulford’s Sam Harrison scored for the fifth game on the trot but could not prevent
his side from going down 3-1 to Strensall, Mick Pipe, Danny Mason and John
Cooper had all earlier bagged for Strensall. Stamford Bridge
were relegated following their 3-0 home defeat by Thorpe.
F1
Racing were confirmed as Division Three Champions following
their 3-1 home victory over Selby Olympia, first half goals from Neil Yeowart
and Andy Proctor started the celebrations which were confirmed in the second
half with a Ben Storey effort. The
second promotion place is still up for grabs as the three leading contenders
all lost, Barmby Moor remain in pole position though despite picking up only
three points from their last five games, their latest set-back was a 4-2 defeat
at Ouseburn where Richard Dwight (2) Ben Jones and an own goal accounted for the home sides
goals. Bishop Wilton remain just a point behind Barmby but their recent form is
just as poor as they slumped to their sixth game without a win as they lost 3-0
at relegation –threatened Elvington. The Harriers, without a home win in three, never looked back after Sam Martin scored for
the fourth game in succession to put them in front, brother Alex then added
their second and Joe Parnell the third. Despite the win Elvington remain in the
relegation zone as their main rivals Crayke won 2-1 at home to Rufforth. Daniel
Whitcombe’s opening goal for the visitors was cancelled out by a Tom Hilling
header and Crayke’s second home win of the season was secured with late goal
from sub Alan Boyd.
As
the promotion contenders continue to flounder Sporting Knavesmire still have a
slim outside chance of taking the runners-up spot and they maintained their
interest with a 4-1 win at Civil Service which included an Alistair Brown hat-trick, Tom Williams had
earlier put Sporting in front which had been cancelled out by Ben Holding for
the home side.
The
top-of-the-table clash in Division Four between Tadcaster Town
and York Acorn which could have decided the outcome of the Championship, finished goal-less, so maybe the destiny of the Championship
title will be decide the two sides meet again next week. Ben Feathers scored
twice for Wheldrake in their 3-0 win at Huntington
with Nial Kirby adding the third goal.
Dunnington
collected the three points they needed to retain the Reserve A title for a
third successive year with a 1-0 win at Old Malton. Matty Playle hit the only
goal of the game as the Dunnington Club celebrated a clean sweep of the title
honours for both the Club’s teams. Dringhouses recorded their fifth successive
win over Huntington Rovers with a comfortable 6-1 victory. ‘Houses raced into a
five goal lead through Tom Hawksby, Callum Mulhearn, Jimmy Clamp (2) and John
Verity before Huntington
pulled a goal back with a Chris Johnson penalty before Joe Galway completed the
rout.
A
John Dey hat-trick helped Easingwold Town edge closer to promotion from Reserve
B as they beat Heslington 6-1,
Jordan Green, Andrew Metcalfe (Snr) and Andrew Metcalfe (Jnr) completed rout
with Alex Sutherland replying for Heslington who played the majority of the
game with 10 men. A win in their final fixture – away at basement side York St
Johns - will secure a return to Reserve
A for Easingwold. A strong Amotherby
side registered their first away success of the season as they hit six
unanswered goals past beat York St
Johns, Andy Phillips led the rout with five of their tally to add to a Mike
Lindsay goal. Tadcaster Magnets moved off the bottom rung of the table after a
goal less draw with Pocklington.
A
Gary Howden goal with virtually the last kick of the game secured all three
points for Selby RSSC and probably the runners-up spot in Reserve C as they defeated basement side Strensall 2-1.
Earlier Ryan Munford had levelled for the hosts after Tom Butterfield had given
Selby the lead. A point in their final
fixture will be enough for the Selby side or even a narrow defeat may still see
them promoted. Thorpe recorded their first away draw in 14 games as they drew
2-2 at Tockwith, Steve Gaye and Steve Poulter scored for the home side.
Poppleton
failed to score for their third away game on the trot but at least they did
manage to secure a point as they drew 0-0 at Hemingbrough.
St
Clements continued their late push for promotion from Reserve D as they chalked
up their 7th straight home win with a 5-2 victory over away-day specialists
Cliffe. The Saints led early in the game courtesy of an Joe White own goal,
Jason Grundy levelled for Cliffe but the hosts led at the break through the
first of two goals from Ricky Mizzi. Joe Hamilton and Josh Johnson added
further goals for the Saints before Joe White struck a goal in the right net. A
win for St Clements in their final fixture against Bishop Wilton would mean
that Crayke would have to take maximum points from their three remaining games
to overhaul St Clements. Wheldrake moved out of the re-election zone after they
chalked up their fourth game without a defeat with a 3-2 win over Huby, James
Smith scored twice for Wheldrake after Nathan Mason had opened Wheldrakes’
account with Tom Horner hitting both Huby goals. Rufforth recorded their first
home draw of the season as they shared two goals with F1 Racing, Steve Fratson
obliged for Rufforth with Nigel Dawber levelling for the visitors.
